Feb. 2008: Hilsman withdrew from the 36th Congressional district Democratic primary.

Biography: Hilsman grew up in Washington, D.C., where his father was Assistant Secretary of State under John Kennedy. The Columbia Law School graduate was active in politics, working with, among others, Bill Clinton and Joe Lieberman. Hilsman worked in the Federal Legal Services program, helping the poor. He left the legal profession to go on to a successful career as a journalist, playwright and screenwriter. He also taught at UCLA, Pepperdine and Pasadena City College. Remaining politically active, he was a delegate to the 2004 Democratic National Convention. His wife, Nancy Kay, is an artist, teacher and critic. They have one son who is a senior at UC Santa Cruz.
