April 14, 2009: The administration of President Barack Obama appointed Bersin to the new Homeland Security Department position of Southwest Border Czar. Bersin reports to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

2006-2009: Bersin served on the executive committee of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.

April, 2005 - Nov., 2006: California Secretary of Education.

1998-2005: Superintendent of San Diego City Schools in the administration of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

1995-1998: Bersin served as U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno’s Southwest Border Representative, or "Border Czar." Bersin played a role in Operation Gatekeeper which was aimed at curbing illegal immigration along the westernmost portion of the U.S.-Mexico border.
