February 23, 2012: Runner received a double lung transplant.
February 22, 2012: Runner announced that she would not seek re-election to SD 17 in 2012, sighting that she was waiting for a lung transplant for a rare autoimmune disease.

Feb. 15, 2010: Runner won a special primary election in the 17th Senate District to replace her husband, George Runner. Sharon Runner defeated Democrat Darren Parker 66%-34% to avoid a runoff.
Feb. 27, 2009: Runner was appointed by Gov. Schwarzenegger to the Agricultural Labor Relations Board.

From 2002 to 2008, she was a California State Assemblymember, where she served as the vice chair of the Appropriations Committee, and also served on the Arts and Entertainment Committee, the Housing Committee and the Veterans Committee. Additionally, Runner owned Runner Group from 1995 to 2008. In 1977, she cofounded Desert Christian Schools, where she worked as a preschool teacher from 1979 to 1980 and an administrator from 1980 to 1995. Runner currently serves on the Desert Christian Schools Board of Directors. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $128,109. Runner is a Republican.
Feb. 12, 2008: Runner revealed that she is suffering from limited scleroderma, a rare disease that has put her on the waiting list for a lung transplant. She said her condition will not stop her from serving out of the remainder of her term.
