 Ron Calderon biography:
Assemblyman Ronald S. Calderon was elected to the 58th Assembly District in November of 2002 and represents the cities of Montebello, Pico Rivera, portions of City of Industry, Downey, La Mirada and Whittier. In addition, he also represents the communities of East Los Angeles, Hacienda Heights, Rowland Heights, South San Gabriel, South San Jose Hills and Valinda.
Calderon serves as Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Water Management, Storage, Conservation and Supply and is a member of the Assembly Select Committees on Urban Youth, West Nile Virus and California Indian Nations. In addition, he sits on the Assembly Committees overseeing Appropriations, Banking & Finance, Insurance, Governmental Organization, Rules, and Utilities & Commerce. Moreover, Assemblyman Calderon is the Chair of the Democratic Freshman Legislative Caucus and was appointed by Speaker NuÏez as Assistant Majority Leader.
Born and raised in Montebello and a graduate of Montebello High School, he received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles and attended Western State University of Law.
Dedicated to building a better community, Assemblyman Calderon has been active in local organizations and public service. Before assuming office, he served on the staffs of Assemblyman Martin Gallegos and Assemblyman Ed Chavez. As Chief of Staff to Assemblyman Ed Chavez, Calderon gained critical knowledge of the legislative process and valuable experience coordinating outreach campaigns.
He was actively involved in the passage of General Obligation Bond Measure EE in the Montebello Unified School District, where his two children attend school. He is currently a member of the La Merced Elementary School PTA, Gangs Out of Downey (GOOD), the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC), the Northeast Community Clinic Board of Directors and the California Center for Public Health Advocacy's Grassroots Nutrition and Physical Activity Team.
Along with a history of strong community involvement, Assemblyman Calderon has substantial experience in business and finance, giving him the background necessary to ensure California's economy continues to rebound. He has served as a manager in the manufacturing industry and as a mortgage banker and a real estate agent. He has also owned a small financial services sales and marketing firm for several years.
Assemblyman Calderon's legislative package demonstrates his dedication to making higher education accessible and affordable for all students, promoting economic development, strengthening local infrastructure, and advocating for the clean up of contaminated groundwater in the San Gabriel Basin. Additionally, he has authored legislation to increase consumer protection against consumer credit bureaus and legislation to promote public safety in order to create safer communities in the 58th District.
Assemblyman Ronald S. Calderon lives in Montebello with Ana, his wife of 20 years, and their two children Jessica and Zachary.
