2007: Salinas gained attention for her six-month relationship with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who was married at the time.

Villaraigosa and his wife, Corina Villaraigosa, separated in June 2007 weeks before he confirmed that he was romantically involved with Salinas.

As a Telemundo news reporter, Salinas covered Mayor Villaraigosa and issues of education reform, immigration and public safety. On June 8, 2007, Salinas read on the air the news of Villaraigosa's marital breakup without disclosing that she had been romantically involved with the mayor for several months.

After the affair became public Salinas received a two-month suspension for her handling of the situation and was one of a handful of employees at Telemundo who were disciplined because of the affair. At the end of that suspension, Salinas was reassigned from her post as temporary anchor to a Telemundo bureau in Riverside County. Instead of returning to her job, she quit.

In November, 2007, Los Angeles Times reported that the Salinas and Villaraigosa ended their romantic relationship weeks earlier.
