Dec. 2, 2009: Speaker Karen Bass says Perez has enough votes to win an election for a new Assembly Speaker. Bass sets a December 10 vote.

Feb. 22, 2008: Perez entered the race for the Democratic nomination for 46th Assembly district, the seat being vacated by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez. Perez's cousin, L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, has not yet said if he will endorse Perez.

-- Perez is political director of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Union Local 324, representing roughly 24,000 workers in Orange County and Southern Los Angeles.

-- Perez is an elected member of the Democratic National Committee and is a superdelegate for the 2008 Democratic presidential primary. Perez says he first endorsed former U.S. Sen. John Edwards, then backed U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton but now is undecided.

-- Perez is a board member for the California League of Conservation Voters, AIDS Project Los Angeles, the Latino Coalition against AIDS, Coro Southern California and the California Center for Regional Leadership.


-- Oct. 12, 2005 - Feb. 21, 2008: Perez served on the board of the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency. He was appointed on Sept. 19, 2005, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Perez's cousin.

-- Perez served as Executive Director of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Region 8 States Council, representing California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Hawaii.

-- Perez served as political director for the California Labor Federation AFL-CIO.
