March 17 2008: Keith Carlson, treasurer of the California Republican Party, filed a lawsuit in Orange County Superior Court challenging Cook's Congressional candidate ballot designation -- mayor of Huntington Beach -- violates election code. Carlson's attorney, Michael Schroeder, says only positions directly elected by the voters can appear on the ballot. Cook claims she is within her right to use the title of mayor of Huntington Beach, a city where the mayor is elected by other council members and the position is rotated based on seniority and number of votes won in the most recent election.
