July 2008: Hutchens hired consultant Dave Gillard as manager of her 2010 campaign to remain as Orange County sheriff.

June 11, 2008: Hutchens was appointed sheriff by the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
Hutchens replaces Michael S. Carona who resigned in January to focus on his upcoming corruption trial. Three supervisors voted for Hutchens, while two voted for Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters. Hutchens will serve the remaining 2 1/2 years of Carona’s term and have the option to run for a new four-year term in 2010.

Hutchens is a retired division chief from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. She spent nearly 30 years with the Los Angeles County and lives in Dana Point.
