Nov. 4, 2011: Gov. Jerry Brown fired Chernow as acting director of the California Department of Conservation amid conflict between the agency and oil producers on regulatory matters. Brown also fired Dept. of Conservation employee Elena Miller, the chief overseer of oil drilling operations in California. Clifford Rechtschaffen was named by Gov. Brown as Chernow's replacement.
