January 22, 2009: Sutley was confirmed by the United States Senate through unanimous consent as leader of the White House Council on Environmental Quality under President Barack Obama.

2008: Sutley was as a prominent supporter of then-Senator Hillary Clinton's presidential primary campaign. She was a member of Clinton's Southern California Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender steering committee.

2006-2009: Sutley was Los Angeles deputy mayor for energy and environment under Antonio Villaraigosa.

2006-2009: Sutley serves on the board of directors for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

2003-2005: Sutley served on the California State Water Resources Control Board.

1999-2003: Sutley was deputy secretary for policy and intergovernmental relations at the California Environmental Protection Agency.

-- Sutley was an energy adviser to former Gov. Gray Davis.

-- During President Bill Clinton's administration, Sutley was an EPA official, including being a special assistant to the EPA administrator in Washington.

Sutley holds a master of public policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and an undergraduate B.A. degree in government from Cornell University.
