Feb 2, 2010: Resigned as Gov. Schwarzenegger's Education Cabinet Secretary

Jan 21, 2009: Thomas was appointed state Secretary of Education by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Thomas replaced David Long who resigned in September 2008.

2007-2009: Thomas served as a consultant to several philanthropic foundations and educational organizations including the Khosla Foundation and the Hewlett Foundation, as well as the California State Parent Teachers Association and the Association of California School Administrators.

2005-2006: Thomas was director for the Reinvigorating Arts Education in California Project.

2005- present: Thomas has has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California, Sacramento Center.

2003-2006: Thomas was director of the Statewide Administrator Training Program.

1999-2005: Thomas served as co-director for the U.S. Department of Education Grant Preparing Tomorrow�s Teacher to Use Technology.

1999-2003: Thomas served as a clinical professor at the University of Southern California, Sacramento Center.

1999-2001: Thomas was an adjunct professor in the Pepperdine University Doctoral Program.

1998-2006: Thomas served as the executive director for the California County Superintendents Education Services Association, the statewide network of California�s 58 county superintendents of schools. He served as director for Preschool for All Planning Support in 2006.

1997-2005: Thomas was an adjunct professor the California State University, Sacramento Graduate School.

1997-1998: Thomas served as director for education technology Office for the California Department of Education and was the executive director for the Council on Technology in Learning.

1996-1999: Thomas served as an adjunct professor for National University.

1996-1997: Thomas was the deputy executive director for the Commission of the Establishment of Academic Content and Performance Standards.

1995-19966: Thomas was assistant superintendent and director of the elementary teaching and learning division for the California Department of Education.

1988-1996: Thomas served as executive secretary for the California State Curriculum Commission.

1987-2004: Thomas was an instructor for the Association of California School Administrators.

1984-1995: Thomas served as director for the curriculum frameworks and instructional resources office for the California Department of Education.

1971-1974: He later worked for the Modesto City School District as a teacher.

1970: Thomas started his teaching career in Modesto.

Thomas is a member of the University of California, Davis Graduate School of Education Board of Advisors.

Thomas was appointed by Governor Pete Wilson to the Academic Standards Commission and served on the High School Exit Exam Committee.

Thomas holds a Doctorate degree in educational leadership with an emphasis in instructional policy and school administration from the University of Southern California, a Master of Arts degree in child and family studies from Washington State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Biola University
