Nov. 9, 2009: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Chavez as undersecretary for the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CDVA). This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $122,424. Governor's release:

Chavez serves on the board of directors for the North County Transit District.

2002-2009: Chavez served on the Oceanside City Council. Bio:

1974-2001: Chavez served in the U.S. Marine Corps, most recently as assistant chief of staff for logistics, Camp Pendleton from 1999 to 2001 and previously as chief of staff, 4th Marine Division in 1998 and assistant chief of staff for logistics for 2nd Marine Division from 1996 to 1997.

Chavez is a graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, Armed Forces Staff College and Air War College.
