May 21, 2010: Zarian was removed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger from the board of the California Transportation Commission. His removal was one day after Zarian voted against a Schwarzenegger-backed plan to allow private companies an increased role in a San Francisco freeway construction project. 1983-1999: Zarian was a member of the Glendale City Council, serving four terms as mayor.

Previously: Zarian served as a member of the Los Angeles County Water Quality Control Board and the Los Angeles County Economic Development Authority.
